Many who open a dollar store recognize the potential positive impact Christmas sales can have on the final annual sales and profits for their business. As a result they focus almost entirely on this part of the year. Yet there are so many other opportunities to build sales and profits. In fact a properly executed sales plan can result in taking an average store and moving it into the ranks of the outstanding. One key to achieving these results could be focusing attention on conducting events throughout the year. Read on as I present an outline to follow to build sales for your business.

Hold an event every month when you open a dollar store. Many of these events can be focused on a holiday during that month. If that doesn’t work, look to the 4 seasons of the year as your next set of event options. If you are still struggling to identify an appropriate event for a month, fall back on others such as founder’s day, anniversary sale, sidewalk sale, and customer appreciation days.

Focus on buying just enough dollar store merchandise for the event. It is important to preplan each monthly even in time to order merchandise specifically for that event. Bring in items you normally wouldn’t carry. Bring in specials that you can locate as well. Just remember; your goal is to buy just enough to support the event. Don’t over-buy and don’t under-buy.

Discount and sell out rather than carrying dollar store merchandise over from one year to the next. All of the merchandise brought in for the event must be closed out and sold out during the event. Never allow merchandise to be boxed and carried in inventory for an entire year in anticipation of the next time the event can be held. It costs you too much time and money. The only exception to this rule is general merchandise you carry on a year around basis anyway. Those items can just be returned to their normal location in your store and sold out.

Promote events to build added dollar store sales. Monthly events will help build customer excitement. As a result sales and profits will also increase. To achieve this be sure you have a marketing and advertising plan for your monthly events. After all, the better you do at getting the word out about upcoming events, the greater the traffic and sales when you open a dollar store.
