How to Create Winning Direct Mail Marketing Pieces That Generate Instant Income
This chapter of my five (5) part series will assist you in creating direct mail marketing pieces that convert like crazy.
With the direct mail competition these days, your direct mail marketing campaign must be phenomenal to get the type of response rates that you are hoping for.
Before laying out your direct mail piece, there are several components to heavily consider in order improve the overall effectiveness.
Copy
Direct mail marketing copy must be strong and enticing in order to get a response. Some things to consider when writing copy are:
- Is your copy clear?
- Is it powerful?
- Is it emotional?
A great deal of sales pieces tug at a consumer’s emotions and when you choose the right audience to mail your piece to in combination with effective copy, you are going to get an increased response rate.
Your copy does not have to have a ton of words to be effective, but they must be the right words.
If you are concerned about your ability to write effective sales copy, consider hiring a ghostwriter who specializes in this area to write it for you. Direct mail marketing can be expensive, so you want to be sure your ad copy is compelling.
One of the first things that the reader will notice is your headline, so that needs to be extremely powerful. Your headline should contain the number one benefit that the prospect will receive by responding to your offer.
Many people just starting out get “Benefits” and “Features” confused. An Let me briefly try to explain the difference here:
Features: Characteristics that physically describe your product and/or service. A feature is something you will find on a technical specifications page. (eg. The new computer has 1 GB of Lightning RAM installed)
Benefits: Describes how your product and/or service will help the customer solve their problem. Tells the customer what they will gain by using the product. (eg. Increase your computer’s performance and eliminate lag time while browsing your favorite websites with the new Lightning RAM)
Another very important part of your ad copy is the call to action. A call to action is what you want your reader to do:
- Are you asking them to go online or call?
- Is the action clear and easy to follow?
The best direct mail marketers repeat their call to action many times throughout their sales piece. You need to tell your reader what to do. Don’t assume that they know.
If you want them to call a number, put the number on the mail piece and say “Call xxx-xxx-xxxx for FREE wealth building information.”
If you want them to visit a website, list the website URL and tell them to go online and visit the site. For example, you might say something like, “To claim your FREE Report, visit www_________com now.”
Offer
Every direct mail piece should or must include an offer of some kind.
- What are you offering?
- Are you giving the reader a discount?
- Are you giving the reader something for free?
In direct mail marketing, dollars produce the best response rates and conversion rates to customers.
One word of caution is to be careful how much you offer. Your direct mail offer must both make sense financially for you while also soliciting the best overall response rate from the readers.
Package
What does the outer offer of your direct mail marketing piece look like? With the amount of mail that consumers are getting these days, your piece must stand out to reduce the amount of time that it is thrown directly into the trash.
One of the very first things that consumers love to open in the mail is anything that looks like a card or that is from someone that they know.
If you can incorporate this idea and concept into your piece, you will have an increase in the number of people who open your mail.
A good example is by using postcards, or 8-page (4 sheets both sides) printed sales letters. A print sales letter is great when written properly.
