A Bad Elevator Speech Could Be Costing You Money!
Imagine this - you are at a business conference featuring Donald Trump as the keynote speaker - whether you like the man or not, there is no denying that he understands business and how to succeed at it.
So, you’re on your way to the keynote address and just as the doors are about to close, you hear a voice call out asking you to hold the elevator. You’re annoyed because you’re concerned about being late for the start of the meeting but despite your annoyance, you comply.
The gentleman offers a sincere ‘thank you’ as the doors shut. And as you begin to absent mindedly acknowledge his gratitude, you feel a lump forming in your throat because you realize that you recognize the voice.
In, what seems like slow motion, you look up to confirm that it is who you thought. You are accidentally sharing an elevator ride with the king of the comb-over!
Don’t be fooled! Just because the chances of this happening with Donald Trump are about a zillion to one, doesn’t make it any less important to be ready to maximize such a moment. Since individuals who have the potential to have enormous impact on your business are rarely recognizable at a glance, it is best to take the Boy Scout approach and always be prepared.
Developing a strong elevator speech should be a core component of your marketing plan. It is the verbal version of your business card; the all important first impression of you and your business; it is your chance to set yourself apart from the crowd.
An elevator speech, in its most basic form, is the description of you and what you do, told in the time it takes to ride an elevator. The key elements are that it be:
1. concise
2. compelling
3. conversational
Your elevator speech should allow your listeners to immediately understand how you can help them. The best elevator speech will create enough intrigue to cause your listener to ask you more about your business.
Here’s one of mine:
I am a results technician and my name is Lisa Almeida. My company is Planit Production and I help small business owners get from where they are, to where they want to be.
I work with my clients to design strategies that help them develop the profit they need to feed their passion and bring there vision to life. Because success doesn’t just happen, you have to planit!
If you had a magic wand that could make any one problem disappear what would you wave it at? (after I get the answer, I ask) Are you ready to planit?
It’s so clich but so very true, you only get one chance to make a first impression.
If you don’t have an elevator pitch or the one you have is weak, I challenge you to make it a priority to change that within the next 7 days. If you’re feeling stuck and need some inspiration, Google “elevator speech” and read some samples.
It won’t cost you a penny to accept this challenge, but it could cost you millions if you don’t.
